Women's Flotilla - Sailing Your Life's Journey!

by: Lisa Bloom

I disappeared for a week.

It was intentional though I had hoped to leave some signs of life while I was gone!

But life rushed me out the door, to the airport and on a surprisingly full plane from Israel to Turkey. I travelled to join the 4th International Women's Sailing Week, a phenomenal initiative of the Turkish conceived and run 'Women's Sailing School' which brings together Women from all over the world to celebrate the beauty of the region and the joy of sailing - women only. Traditionally sailing is quite a macho sport where women are often left aside while the men take over the running of the boat. However, Neslihan Karayel (her surname is the Turkish for the 'north west wind' which happily we experienced quite a few times during the week as it filled our sails and kept us busy on board!) has created a place where women can learn to sail and qualify as skippers, a place where we can celebrate the many faces of women's strength and empowerment . This week was witness to such wonderful display!

I had been warned by many that I was crazy to attempt to travel to Turkey during these turbulent times. I paid no heed to these warnings, having attended the Women's Flotilla last year (isn't it amazing how so quickly 'flotilla' has become a dirty word!). My first experience was to be greeted by pleasant Turkish travel companions on the flights and arriving in Marmaris, my yacht awaited me with the Turkish and Israeli Flags hoisted side by side.

The week was simply amazing. I reconnected with life at sea (yes, hints of my colorful past!), I reconnected with the simplicity of life without kids, partner and a hectic work schedule, I reconnected with wonderful friends and of course, with myself. I was romanced by the good food, sunshine, powerful winds, beautiful sea life and the company of wonderful women. What more can a girl ask for!

Every day started with yoga and a hike by which time it was so hot that we dived into the amazingly blue and clear water to cool down and pique our appetite for breakfast. After eating fruit, yogurt and muesli or sometimes the fresh bread baked by the local women and delivered by little boats that pulled up alongside ours, we rested, tidied up the boat and set sail. Some days the sea was quiet and we were forced to put down anchor at the most beautiful sheltered bays for swim and snorkel stops. Other days the winds were so strong that we had to wear harnesses and life jackets. As we used to say in Dublin, the crack was mighty (that means we had such a great laugh!) as only girls know how, and we talked about everything under the sun!

In the evenings we moored or anchored in more of the wonderful sheltered bays that had simple restaurants, some with no road access, electricity or running water. We then celebrated the day with happy hour, good music and followed by a lovely evening meal.

It is a vacation that involves serious physical exertion and I love that. We had ample opportunity to witness our own powerful selves sailing through rough waters. It was an awesome sight and a heart-warming experience. There are so many parallels to our own life's journey. You are stuck with people that you may not normally choose to be with in such close and confined space. You are faced with physical and emotional challenges.

The outcome was wonderful. We all pulled together and the atmosphere on the boat was supportive, inspiring and caring. Each individual taught me so much. There was Denise, who never stops smiling, showed me how much a smile can change the world! And Audrey taught me to stop sweating the small stuff. Serra showed me how being intensely feminine and beautiful can still be strong and powerful. Feryal showed me how she stopped fearing her 6th sense and makes powerful positive use of her talents.; so many lessons, so much inspiration.

And I told stories! Lots of stories!

Perhaps the most wonderful outcome of all was to understand that women thrown together from all walks of life, and many cultures, beliefs and backgrounds, will always find a way to enjoy, appreciate and rejoice in each other's company.

And as Feryal told me when she read the remains of my Turkish coffee - what I am doing (working with women entrepreneurs through story) is what I am meant to do, if I had not found it, it would have found me. What a blessing, what an honor!

How To Use The Power Of Perception For Smooth Social Sailing

by: George Hutton

If you've ever been in an argument, and you were absolutely certain of your position, it can be embarrassing to later find out you were wrong. When we are so sure that we are right, and the other person is wrong, we can sometimes say things that we will later regret.

Here's a good trick to avoid falling into that trap. It starts from an understand of the difference between an associated viewpoint and a dissociated viewpoint. Ninety nine percent of the time, when we are awake, and conscious, we are in an associated frame. Meaning that we see things from our own eyes, and feel things from our own experience.

For most of us, the only time we ever see things from a dissociated point of view is in our memories. When we think back to memories, usually memories that happened long ago, we sometimes see them as if we were a third party watching events take place, including watching ourselves.

Sometimes when people have dreams they also see things in a dissociated way, as they are watching themselves as if they were a third party observer. Most people aren't even aware of the difference, but it can be an incredibly useful skill to switch back and forth, in real time.

The way to do this is first do it while you are along. This may sound similar to some secret Russian remote viewing training, but it works just the same. As you are sitting there in your chair, instead of seeing the things in front of you, imagine that you are off to the side, watching yourself sitting in the chair. Describe out loud what you see. Try on different perspectives from various places in the room and see how that feels.

When you're ready, try this out in public. Sit in a coffee shop and imagine seeing yourself, from a dissociated, third person view, from many different perspectives. Next step is to imagine that you are other people, watching you. Use your instincts to help you imagine seeing you as they see you.

After you've easily mastered that, it's time for the next level. Watch and listen to yourself from various viewpoints while you are in a conversation with somebody. Now you can flip between three different perspectives. From your own viewpoint, from your conversation partner's viewpoint, and from an objective, third person viewpoint.

Once you get pretty good at this, you'll find it's much easier to see things from the perspectives of others, and this will drastically improve your ability to persuade and influence others, as well as avoiding those nasty arguments.

Sailing Regattas - British Virgin Islands

by: Jim Linskey

The British Virgin Islands is the Mecca for sailing which lends to the assemblage of some of the largest sailboat racing fleets for sailing regattas in the Caribbean. The diversity of organized sailboat regattas in the BVI is one thing that makes sailing here in the BVI so unique. Regattas of all types spanning from a "whatever floats race," where crews bring their "boats" to the regatta, assemble them, and set off racing, to high level international match racing regattas.

The BVI Spring Regatta, held on the waters off the capital island of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola, attracts about two hundred fifty yachts annually for the event. All types of racing classes are spread out on five separate racing courses, from beach catamarans to eighty-foot maxi racers. The charter boat fleets also have a large racing class, giving those that don't have their own yachts based in the British Virgin Islands, the opportunity to compete in the fabulous venue, with steady trade winds and warm waters. The IC 24 class, which is built here on Tortola, also assembles a large sailing fleet with an international blend of sailors. This upcoming year will be the twenty-ninth running of the Sweethearts of the Caribbean Regatta, that has a diverse fleet of the "oldies but goodies" wooden boats and also gives the vintage fiberglass yachts of decades back an opportunity to test their skills against each other on a more even playing field.

On nearly every weekend during the season, which starts in October and goes through the end of July, one can find all types of regattas being held - from groups of junior sailors in small prams to the larger fully crewed keelboats. Several organizations in the British Virgin Islands also hold racing clinics throughout the year for both juniors and adults to hone in on their racing skills. One of the better-known sailing clinics in the British Virgin Islands for teaching sailing and sailboat racing for the children of the BVI is the Kids and the Sea (KATS) program, which are in their sixteenth year of operation.

In the British Virgin Islands, there are three main yacht clubs that maintain a busy regatta calendar during the year. The yacht clubs based in Tortola and Virgin Gorda sponsor the majority of the regattas in the BVI. The water sports oriented resort Bitter End Yacht Club of Virgin Gorda, hosts a variety of regattas held during the year on the Gorda Sound. The Bitter End also sponsors a Pro-Am regatta that attracts some of the world's best sailboat racers from the top tier America's Cup teams along with amateur sailors that are given a chance to sail with and against these well-known sailing personalities.

Based in Tortola is the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club that among being the sponsor of the BVI Spring Regatta, hosts a plethora of regattas during the year from dinghy races to keelboat regattas. Loyal West End Yacht Club holds many "fun" type regattas that attract many of those racers that love to compete, but also to have loads of fun doing it, with great parties and prizes for all that sail.

If you are one that likes sailboat racing, whether watching from a spectator boat or actually joining in with a crew, the British Virgin Islands is truly one of the finest places to participate in a sailing regatta in the world. Sailing Destinations - Gippsland Lakes

by: Kerry Goodbrand

As far as sailing destinations go, Gippsland Lakes is just terrific. It's just a few hours easy drive from Melbourne. This makes it a perfect long weekend sailing destination and the opportunities for diverse interests are absolutely wonderful.

Hiring a yacht or cruiser from Riviera Nautic at Metung is a breeze. Friday night on board is free so it's well worth making the effort to leave as soon as the week is over and settling in before bedtime. By Saturday morning you feel like you've already had half a weekend relaxation at one of my favorite sailing destinations.

The pre-departure briefing is excellent and tailored to meet your particular desires. Whether you want action or nature, or anything in between, the shore crew will ensure you know exactly where to go. You're then set free to revel, relax & recharge in your own way, peacefully alone or with a few friends. The on-board charts are excellent and a little navigation is required if you wish to avoid running aground.

For a bit of activity, Paynesville is a leisurely day's sail away and an excellent sailing destination. Tucked in between the mainland & Raymond Island this makes for a perfectly protected mooring and berthing is easy to find. The town is quite quaint & has everything you could want including a jetty-side restaurant which serves a great meal or a pint so you can unwind as you watch the passing parade. If you time it right, you'll be there for the jazz festival - meander from venue to venue and savor not only the talent but the local wines too. It's a terrific spot to hole up after a day's sailing.

For those who prefer a more nature-based adventure, head south to one of the several jetties, take an easy stroll over the sand dunes and experience the most beautiful, deserted, unending Ninety Mile Beach. You'll be forgiven for thinking you're the only person on earth as you eye runs as far as it can see along the untouched beauty of the deserted seascape.

One cannot help but be awestruck by the amazing bird life here. Two national parks border the lakes. One of the few mainland-based Pelican rookeries is quite easily accessed and so close you can virtually pull their tail feathers. The variety of bird life is extremely wide so you'll never be bored, constantly finding another of the 140 species in the area. You'll also find kangaroos, koalas and other native animals if you look hard enough.

If you're just after peace & tranquility, well, there's nothing much to beat one of the many tiny, secluded, romantic bays like Boxes Creek or Duck Arm. When the day is done, you can't help but soak up the fresh air and refresh your soul.

For anyone who has a bit more time to spare, Gippsland Lakes is definitely one of the most restful and interesting places to spend a sailing vacation. With more time you'll be able to visit Johnsonville & Swan Reach and explore further west beyond McLennan's Strait. The marina crew will advise you on suggested itineraries for up to 7 glorious days.

No matter what you like to fill your weekend with, Gippsland Lakes will definitely delight. Awake from a perfectly calm night's sleep in a sheltered cove to amazing bird life or arise to a hot shower at the marina after a great night out ashore - the choice is yours and it's all here. Gippsland Lakes is certainly a gem.

Kerry Goodbrand is a qualified skipper who has raced extensively off-shore and represented his country at Windsurfer World Championships. These days he prefers cruising and relaxing in tranquil calm coves with a few good friends. He is the founder & CEO of http://www.sailing-destinations.com.
